Until 1962, architects were trained only in the central universities of the Soviet Union. Young specialists that were sent to work to our republic, did not work for a long time and returned to their place of residence. Thus, the shortage of architects in the country was evident. In 1960, there were 30 architects in the country who graduated from universities in different years, and only 5 of them were local residents.

In 1962, the Union of Architects of Tajikistan, together with the Construction Committee of the Republic, made a proposal to create an architectural group at the Tajik Polytechnic Institute (TPI). In the same year, this proposal was supported and admission to the first course began. Due to the lack of teachers, third-year students were sent to the Kyiv Civil Engineering Institute to continue their studies. At that time, the Department of Architecture that organized the training of architects, had only 3 full-time teachers (S.A. Vavilova, I.S. Grudin and V. Samylin).

In 1965, the head of the department was a candidate of technical sciences, associate professor N.Kh Yakubov. In 1972-1988 he was elected as a rector of TTU, and then head of the "Architecture of civil and industrial buildings" and "Urban and economic construction" departments. His great efforts to provide the material and technical base, to educate the first graduates in the field of architecture and the first Laureates of the All-Union competitions of diploma projects in architectural specialties, to a large extent contributed to the improvement of the quality of architectural education.

The first teachers were the leading architects of the republic, who had extensive production and design experience, such as Honored Builder of Tajikistan S. L. Anisimov and Honored Architect of Tajikistan G. Yu. Aizikovich. Architects E.V. Erzovsky, M.M. Sodykov, Kh.A. Zukhuriddinov, G.V. Solominov, S.B. Neumivakin, A.I. Makukha, I.A. Vvedenskaya, as well as young graduates of the institute, Moscow architects V. Voloshin and V. Boyko were involved in teaching.

The first architects of the country graduated from the institute in 1968, and at the same year two graduation projects (V.Ya. Bezlakovskiy and V.I. Kozhinov) took part in the All-Union competition for the best graduation project in the field of architecture and received diplomas from the Union of Architects of the USSR. Starting from this year, the architectural specialty has presented works to various competitions at the Soviet and international level and won high awards at these competitions.

Already in 1969, the department was able to provide the best graduates in the architecture specialty. Architecture graduates Sh.M. Karimov, R.S. Mukimov and S.K. Ashurmatov were sent to work as teachers of the department. Then other graduates N.I. Shanidze, L.P. Shanidze, R.D. Karimov, B.A. Zukhurdinov, K.I. Naimov, S.M. Mamajonova, A.A. Akbarov were involved in this work. In the same years (1964) there was also an evening department of this specialty, and in 1969 this department was graduated by the first architects, most of whom were employees of design institutes and already worked as architects (Yu.L. Parkkhov, V. I. Bezlakovsky).

In the early 1980s, thanks to the annual training of 50-60 architects at the day and evening departments of the institute, not only the ranks of design organizations in Dushanbe, Leninabad-Khujand, Kurgan-Tyube were replenished, but also the formation of new institutions, such as Dushanbegiprogor, Tajikkolkhoz and others. This led to a triple increase in the number of members of the Union of Architects of Tajikistan, the provision of scientific restoration and production workshops of the Ministry of Culture of Tajikistan with local specialists. Most of the chief architects of regions, large cities and districts of the republic are graduates of the architectural schools of the republic that work in the creative development of urban and rural architecture of the republic, taking into account the preservation of national and local traditions.

In 1972, the multidisciplinary faculty was divided into the "Architectural Design" and "Painting, Drawing and Sculpture" departments. Head of the "Architectural design" department - the first candidate of architectural sciences in the republic, associate professor Kh.Kh. Khakimov was elected, and the "Painting, Drawing and Sculpture" department was headed by the best artist of the republic Grudin I.S. In 1973, the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering was established at the Institute with Kh.Kh. Khakimov as a head of the department. In 1981, R.S. Mukimov was elected as a head of the Architectural Design department, candidate of architectural sciences. In September 1984, "Architectural Design" and "Painting, Drawing and Sculpture" departments were merged and a new "Architecture and Design" department was created. In the early 1990s, “Fundamentals of Design and Architectural Graphics” department was separated, headed by A.A. Akbarov, Candidate of Architectural Sciences, Associate Professor.

Currently, architects and designers are trained in the new educational building of the "Construction and Architecture" faculty, opened in September 2013 by the President of the Republic of Tatarstan Emomali Rakhmonov. Specialty of Architecture is located on the 5th floor of the campus. Classes are held in large and bright classrooms, equipped with technical teaching aids, workplaces for each student, the number of which has reached more than 250 people.

The teaching staff consists of 27 highly qualified specialists, including professors, doctors and candidates of sciences. Many of them are engaged in design practice and are the authors of multistory buildings and structures built in cities and villages of Tajikistan.
